Daily Disposable Lenses

Daily Disposable Lenses

Many established contact lens patients started off in lenses that they would replace every month, or sometimes every two weeks. Those lenses had to be made thicker in order to withstand cleaning pressure and often allowed poor oxygen to reach the cornea. The result is lenses that tend to dry out towards the end of their replacement period, limiting wearability. Those lenses also tend to dry out toward the end of the day, especially with computer use, so many patients find that they need to remove lenses around dinner or use eye drops to make the lenses last.

Daily disposable lenses are lenses thrown away at the end of each day, giving patients that "fresh lens feeling" the next morning with a new lens. Since these lenses do not require cleaning, they can be made thinner to allow more oxygen to the cornea, which helps to maintain corneal health and prevent eye infections. The materials used in daily disposable lenses also tend to stay hydrated for longer periods of time, resulting in most patients finding they can better tolerate the lens into the evening hours. For patients who struggle with allergies, daily disposable lenses are guaranteed to not bring any of the prior day allergens into the next day. Because these lenses have become more and more common, contact lens companies have prioritized their development, meaning not only an increase in comfort and safety, but also may result in sharper vision. [Paragraph break] Although sometimes the initial price may increase for the year's supply compared to what reusable lenses may be, there are great rebates available, and patients often will sometimes save money since they no longer need to purchase solutions or eye drops.
